In Iran, senior cleric calls for Karroubi indictment
A senior Iranian cleric says defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi must be prosecuted for "libeling the system", unless he can prove his allegations.
Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami on Thursday addressed the issue of a letter sent by Karroubi to Expediency Council head Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani in which the defeated candidate proposed an inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse of post-election detainees.
"If a person libels someone with allegations of sexual abuse, then he deserves to be punished for libel," said the cleric.

"No judicial system can consider as valid a confession obtained as a result of harsh interrogations or under torture," said the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Nowak.

Karroubi: inmates 'tortured to death'
Iran's defeated opposition presidential candidate has said that some protesters held after last month's disputed poll were tortured to death in prison.
The claim by Mehdi Karroubi comes days after he said a number of prisoners, both male and female, had been raped.
Officials deny the rape claims, but admit that abuses have taken place.
The BBC's Jon Leyne says the opposition uses the issue to maintain political pressure without directly questioning Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's poll victory.

"The president [Barack Obama] has also said, look, we need to take stock of this in September. If there is a response, it needs to be on a fast track. We're not going to keep the window open forever," she said.

Yildiz explained that although the United States does not welcome the idea of Iran entering the Nabucco project, it was not how he saw the matter.
